WhatsApp Enables Sending High-Resolution Photos

In Brief

  • The latest update of WhatsApp allows iPhone and Android users to send high-resolution photos via the messaging platform.
  • The "HD Photos" feature enables users to send photos in a resolution of 3024 x 4032, compared to the previous compression of 920 x 1280.
  • The feature will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp has released an update that allows iPhone and Android users to send high-resolution photos through the messaging platform. This finally resolves the previous limitation of low image quality.

Previously, photos sent via WhatsApp were automatically compressed and the resolution was reduced to 920 x 1280 in order to save storage space and speed up image sharing over slow data connections.

With the update, users now have the ability to send pictures in "HD quality" to friends and family. This corresponds to a resolution of 3024 x 4032. The introduction of this feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook post.

Version 23.16.0 of the app adds an "HD" button at the top of the photo-sharing screen, next to the other image editing tools. Tapping the HD button brings up a pop-up that allows users to switch from the standard quality to HD quality.

Recipients of HD photos will see an HD label in the corner of the image to indicate that they have received a higher quality version. All high-resolution images are protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption.

According to Meta, users with a low bandwidth internet connection will receive photos in standard quality and can choose whether to keep the standard version or upgrade to HD, if available.

The new feature will be rolled out globally in the coming weeks, and Meta says that the ability to send high-resolution videos via WhatsApp will be coming soon.
