USB-C on the iPhone 15: Speed differences and new cables - What you need to know

USB-C Finally Lands on the iPhone, but with Speed Variations

  • It's expected that all four forthcoming iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port, boasting different speeds across the line-up.
  • The USB-C ports on the pricier iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models are likely to support at least the USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 specifications, while the cheaper models may stick to USB 2.0 speeds.
  • Rumours suggest that Apple will include a new braided USB-C cable with all iPhone 15 models, although the cable may be restricted to USB 2.0 speeds.

September is almost upon us and all Apple fans know what that means - new iPhones! This year we are anticipating some interesting updates, particularly when connecting your Apple gadgets.

The USB-C Era Begins at Apple

The most exciting fact is that we're finally going to see USB-C ports on the iPhone. This is a significant development as so far, all iPhones have been fitted with a Lightning port. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed that the USB-C ports on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will support speeds of up to 20 or 40 Gbps, a massive leap when compared to the current USB 2.0 ports of the lower models, which are capped at 480 Mbps.

But Not All USB-Cs are Created Equal

Interestingly, there will be variations in the USB-C speeds across the different iPhone models. While the higher-end Pro models will support at least the USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 specifications, the cheaper iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will stick to the USB 2.0 speeds we're familiar with from existing iPhones. This could be frustrating for those contemplating a switch to a cheaper iPhone model, yet still wanting to enjoy the benefits of fast data transfers.

And there's yet another surprise - according to rumours, Apple will include a new braided USB-C cable with all iPhone 15 models. But before you break into cheers, consider that the cable might still be restricted to USB 2.0 speeds. This means customers buying an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max may need to purchase a separate cable to benefit from the higher speeds.

In Short

The arrival of USB-C on the iPhone is undoubtedly an exciting development, but the potential speed disparities between models and the possible lack of fast cables could cause some confusion. Nevertheless, with the right equipment, the switch to USB-C should significantly speed up data transfer between your iPhone and other devices. So, look forward to September when Apple is expected to unveil the new models.
