Data transfer speeds for iPhone 15: USB-C unchanged in standard models, Pro models with higher speed
Summary
- All iPhone 15 models are expected to use USB-C ports for the first time, but a rumor suggests that there will be no increase in data transfer speeds for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models despite the switch.
- According to the rumor, the USB-C cables included in the iPhone 15 package are limited to USB 2.0 data transfer speeds with a rate of 480 MBps, the same speed as Lightning.
- In contrast, both iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to support higher USB-C transfer speeds. As per analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, iPhone 15 Pro models will support "at least" USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3.
The Story
A leaker named Majun Bu, who has previously shared details about Apple's new cables, says that the USB-C cables coming in the iPhone 15 boxes will actually be limited to USB 2.0 data transfer speeds with a rate of 480 MBps. This is the same speed as Lightning.
On the other hand, rumors suggest that the iPhone 15 Pro models will support higher USB-C transfer speeds. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro models will support "at least" USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3. By comparison, the iPad Pro has a Thunderbolt port for transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, while the entry-level iPad's USB-C port is limited to only 480 Mbps.
With the higher data transfer speed, the iPhone 15 Pro models will thus be able to transfer videos and other file types much faster than the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus.
New Information on the USB-C Cable for the iPhone 15
According to the report, each iPhone 15 will include a braided USB-C charging cable in the box, which is thicker (hence more durable) and 50% longer than the Lightning cable that comes with the current iPhone models. It is also rumored that the cables will be color-coded according to the possible new iPhone colors and will be available in at least Black, White, Yellow, Blue, and Orange.
In Short
In a nutshell, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will make the switch to USB-C ports, their data transfer speed will remain at 480 MBps, the same speed as Lightning. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro models will support "at least" USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, which means a significantly higher data transfer speed. The USB-C cables to be included in the iPhone 15 boxes are likely to be more durable and longer than the current Lightning cables.
