Apple Watch: Rumors about an exciting 10th-anniversary update in 2024 or 2025

Summary

  • Rumors point to a significant 10-year anniversary update for the Apple Watch in 2024 or 2025.
  • A potential new magnetic band connection could render old bands unusable.
  • Speculations suggest that the watch display may utilise microLED technology, which is more economical and durable.

Happy Birthday, Apple Watch!

Ladies and Gentlemen, can you believe how swiftly time flies by? The first Apple Watch was introduced in April 2015, implying we're close to the 10th anniversary of Apple's premier wearable technology. Yes, you read that correctly, a grand total of 10 years! And if you know how Apple celebrates milestones - remember the iPhone X for their 10th anniversary in 2017? – we might be in for a big treat.

Redesigning

My esteemed colleague Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning a major redesign of the Apple Watch for its 10th anniversary. And guess what is on Apple's wish list... a sleeker case. Yes, we’re talking about an even thinner Apple Watch. Could this be true? It seems so.

Bands & Attachments

According to Gurman, Apple is also looking to develop new kinds of bands for the Apple Watch. A magnetic attachment system is in the mix. This change would free up the space currently occupied by the recesses for the existing band attachment points, and more space means more room for other internal components, suggesting something thinner in the pipeline, right?

The implication here is that an Apple Watch with a new band attachment would likely not be backward compatible with older bands. Whether the magnetic band will be ready in time for the launch of the Apple Watch X or if Apple will modify the band design at all remains to be seen.

Display

According to rumors, Apple is developing a microLED display technology for the Apple Watch, which might debut by 2025. MicroLED is a relatively new technology that uses microscopic LEDs for individual pixels. Compared with the existing LED technology, microLED is more energy-efficient and robust.

Health & Safety

Data about the Apple Watch X's new health features is still under wraps, but Apple is working on critical advancements that might be ready in time. Technologies for measuring blood pressure and glucose levels are key. Both functions would not pierce the skin, although the glucose measuring technology is still some ways off. This would utilize infrared light, and Gurman indicates that it is likely to be introduced towards the end of the decade.

Gurman is also uncertain whether Apple will release the new watch in 2024 or 2025. The original Apple Watch was introduced in September 2014 but was not officially released until April 2015. Therefore, Apple could celebrate the Apple Watch anniversary on either of these dates.

In Short

While there's still some uncertainty over the exact details of the 10-year Apple Watch, we can expect Apple to bring us something exciting indeed. A design overhaul, new technologies, and potentially groundbreaking health features will undoubtedly intrigue every Apple fan. We'll just have to wait and see what Apple has planned for the following years. But one thing is certain: The Apple Watch has transformed how we perceive and utilize technology, a feat it will likely continue to achieve.
